What You Will Need
All exam applicants (candidates) must present a current valid government issued photographic identification for admittance to the examination. Acceptable forms of identification are:
Be sure to bring a copy of your admissions letter with you. The name on the letter must match with your current photographic I.D.
You are required to bring your own kit with sufficient quantity of supplies in sanitary condition. This includes the required implements in proper working order and protective drapes. Your kit must be kept closed throughout the test except when removing or replacing materials for a particular service. Your kit will be used during the examination as dry storage and is considered part of the work area.
Manufacturer’s labels are required on all disinfectants and sanitizers. An EPA registered disinfectant that demonstrates bactericidal, fungicidal and virucidal properties must be used. Simulated products are NOT allowed for disinfectants and hand sanitizers.
Mannequin Head, Tripod, And Hand
California Cosmetology candidates are required to use a mannequin head(s) and hand(s) for all services required on the practical examination.
In addition to the required supplies and equipment currently listed on the Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB), all cosmetology candidates must also bring the following:
- Mannequin head(s)
- Tripod (width of the base must be 29” or less)
- Mannequin hand(s) with artificial nails attached
Mannequin heads that have been purchased pre-sectioned indicating the sections by various colors and/or notches are NOT allowed during any part of the practical examination.
Mannequin hands with removable fingers (trainer hands) are NOT permitted during the examinations. Prior to reporting to the examination, candidates MUST apply a set of artificial nail tips to the mannequin hand(s)
In this ebook, where ever we mention “Model” in the procedures, you need to use the mannequin head as though it were a live person.

During The Test
|You will be evaluated at all times during the testing. You should continue demonstrating until you have completed the entire section of a class or the examiner calls time. You will be given 10 minutes at the beginning of the test for client protection and to set up the general supplies you will use throughout the examination. You will be given 2 minutes to set up the supplies needed for each section of the examination.|
|Warning: The order of the practical sections may not be given in the exact same order listed in the Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB).The examiner may choose to give them in a different order.|
|Verbal instructions will be read twice for each section of the examination. Each examination section is timed and has a maximum time allowance. Once you have completed all tasks in a section, step back to indicate that you are finished. In the event that all candidates complete the section before the allotted time has elapsed, the examiners will proceed to the next section of the examination.|

|Tip: It is important to remember to step back when you have completed all tasks in a section to let the examiner know you are done.|
|Warning: The examiner will only repeat directions twice, so be sure to pay close attention during the entire test.|
You must follow all appropriate public protection and infection control procedures during all phases of the practical examination that you will use once licensed to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the public. If you have an emergency situation please ask to speak with an examiner.
|Warning: In the event of a blood spill, you are expected to follow the NIC Health and Safety Standards. Failure to do so may result in your dismissal from the examination.|
What “Not” To Have With You Or Do During The Test
Items NOT permitted for you to have in the examination room:
|• Cellular phone
• Any electronic devices (watches, pagers, cameras, iPods, tape recorders, programmable calculators, etc.)
• Printed materials of any kind
• Handwritten notes
|Talking to other candidates or any examiner during the test is strictly prohibited and will result in you being dismissed immediately from the test. The only exception is you may speak to an examiner if you have an emergency. Your examiner has been instructed not to answer any questions concerning the examination|
|Warning: You may only talk to an examiner if you have an emergency.|
|You are not to leave the examination area without proper permission. You must get permission to leave the examination area for any reason, including restroom usage or at the completion of the examination.|
|Tip: Since you are on a limited time frame for each test, it is advisable that you use the restroom before the start of testing and during your 15 minute break.|
